Why PEMF Technology

Anatomy

The knee is one of the strongest joints in your body. It is made up of three main parts; the femur, the tibia, and the patella. Each of the ends where they touch are covered with articular cartilage- a smooth, slippery substance that protects and cushions the knee. The articular cartilage is a tough and rubbery substance in the shape of two wedges called meniscus and act as shock absorbers for your knees. Additionally, your knee has a thin lining of synovial membrane which releases a fluid that lubricates the cartilage to reduce the friction.

Description

The three major types of arthritis that affect the knee are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.

Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is most commonly found in the knee and is caused by degeneration resulting from years of wear and tear, which is why it is more common in people over 50. In Osteoarthritis, the cartilage that acts as your shock absorbers wears away. As it wears away the cartilage gets frayed, becomes rough and the protection and space between the bone decreases. This can result in bone on bone rubbing and can produce painful bone spurs.

Osteoarthritis develops slowly and the pain it causes worsens over time.

Symptoms

Generally, the pain develops gradually over time, although sudden onset is also possible. Other symptoms include:

  • The joint may become stiff and swollen, making it difficult to bend and straighten the knee.
  • Pain and swelling may be worse in the morning, or after sitting or resting.
  • Vigorous activity may cause pain to flare up.
  • Loose fragments of cartilage and other tissue can interfere with the smooth motion of joints. The knee may "lock" or "stick" during movement. It may creak, click, snap or make a grinding noise (crepitus).
  • Pain may cause a feeling of weakness or buckling in the knee.
  • Many people with arthritis note increased joint pain with rainy weather.

About Meniscus Injury

Meniscus tears are among the most common knee injuries. Anyone at any age can tear a meniscus, but is more common in athletics, especially for contact sports. When people talk about torn cartilage in the knee, they are usually referring to a torn meniscus.

Anatomy

The knee is one of the strongest joints in your body. It is made up of three main parts; the femur, the tibia, and the patella. Each of the ends where they touch are covered with a smooth, slippery substance that protects and cushions the knee called articular cartilage. The articular cartilage is a tough and rubbery substance in the shape of two wedges called meniscus and act as your knee’s shock absorbers.

Description

Menisci tear in different ways. They are designated by their look:

  • Bucket Handle
  • Flap
  • Radial

In sports, most tears occur with other injuries such and ACL or PCL tears.

Cause

Sudden meniscus tears often happen during sports. While at play, people tend to squat and then twist rapidly.

Degenerative meniscus tears are more likely to occur in older people. As the cartilage weakens over time, the aged tissue is more prone to tears. A small movement, like an awkward step, may be enough to cause a tear.

Symptoms

The most common explanation of meniscus tear is, “I heard a pop.” Most people can still walk on their injured knee and athletes can play the rest of the game. However, over the next 2 to 3 days, your knee will gradually become more stiff and swollen.

The most common symptoms of meniscus tear are:

  • Pain
  • Stiffness and swelling
  • Catching or locking of your knee
  • The sensation of your knee "giving way"
  • You are not able to move your knee through its full range of motion

A piece of meniscus may come loose and drift into the joint. This can cause your knee to slip, pop, or lock. If the tear is in the outer edge where there is increased blood flow you might not need surgery. If the symptoms described below don’t continue, conservative treatment might be all you need. The core to conservative treatment is based on RICE:

  • Rest. Take a break from the activity that caused the injury. Your doctor may recommend that you use crutches to avoid putting weight on your leg.
  • Ice. Use cold packs for 20 minutes at a time, several times a day. Do not apply ice directly to the skin.
  • Compression. To prevent additional swelling and blood loss, wear an elastic compression bandage.
  • Elevation. To reduce swelling, recline when you rest, and put your leg up higher than your heart.

Runner’s Knee or Patellofemoral Pain is a broad term used to describe pain in the front of the knee and around the patella, or kneecap. It is sometimes called "runner's knee" or "jumper's knee" because it is common in people who are active in sports. However, patellofemoral pain syndrome can occur in non-athletes, as well. Runner’s knee may make it difficult to climb stairs, kneel down, and perform other everyday activities.

So what can cause Runner's Knee? Many things may contribute to the development of patellofemoral pain syndrome. Problems with alignment of the kneecap and overuse from athletics or training are often significant factors.

Normal knee anatomy

Your knee is a large complex joint in the body. It is made up of three parts the femur (thighbone), the upper end of the tibia (shinbone), and the patella (kneecap).

Ligaments and tendons connect the femur to the bones of the lower leg. There are four main ligaments that hold the knee together like ropes. Muscles are connected to the bones by tendons. Several structures in the knee make movement easier and smoother. One of those features is the groove that your patella rests called the trochlea. When you bend your patella tracks in this groove.

Additionally, you have a slippery substance that covers the trochlear groove, and the underside of the patella called articular cartilage. You also have synovium which is a thin line that covers the joint and can produce fluid that lubricates the joints. Finally, you have a fat pad under your patella that works like a shock absorber.

Description

Patellofemoral pain syndrome (Runner’s Knee) occurs when the soft tissue and bone of the knee cap sense pain. In some cases, this is caused by the by the breakdown of cartilage. Since cartilage does not have any nerves it cannot directly cause pain it can however lead to swelling of the synovium and pain in the bone itself.

Cause

Overuse

In many cases, patellofemoral pain syndrome is caused by vigorous physical activities that put repeated stress on the knee such as jogging, squatting, and climbing stairs. It can also be caused by a sudden change in physical activity. This change can be in the frequency of activity, such as increasing the number of days you exercise each week. It can also be in the duration or intensity of activity, such as running longer distances.

Other factors that may contribute to patellofemoral pain include:

  • Use of improper sports training techniques or equipment
  • Changes in footwear or playing surface

Symptoms

For “Runner's Knee,” pain is a dull, aching pain in the front of the knee. This pain, which usually begins gradually and is frequently activity-related may be present in one or both knees. Other common symptoms include:

  • Pain during exercise and activities that repeatedly bend the knee, like climbing stairs, running, jumping, or squatting.
  • Pain after sitting for a long period of time with your knees bent, such as one does in a movie theater or when riding on an airplane.
  • Pain related to a change in activity level or intensity, playing surface, or equipment.
  • Popping or crackling sounds in your knee when climbing stairs or when standing up after prolonged sitting.

Why Cold and Compression

Cold, often called Cryotherapy, and static compression is commonly used for the treatment of pain and inflammation after acute injury or surgical procedures. Cryotherapy has become one of the most common treatments in orthopedic medicine.

The reason for using cold is to lower the temperature of the injured tissue. The reduction in temperature reduces the metabolic rate and helps the injured tissue survive the period after the issue. Several studies have shown that metabolic rate decreases by application of cryotherapy. Compression is often used in conjunction with cryotherapy for the care of injuries. Applying compression increases the external pressure on the tissue to prevent edema (swelling). The compression reduces the fluid loss from the vessels in the injured area, making it more difficult for fluids to accumulate.

Ice with compression is also colder than ice alone, because of the improved skin contact and increased tissue density caused by the compression. Tissue reaches its lowest temperature faster and the tissue stays cool even after treatment ends.
