Why PEMF Technology

 What are PEMFs and how do they work?

Science teaches us that everything is energy. Energy is always dynamic and, therefore, has a frequency; it changes by the second or minute, for example, at the very least.

All energy is electromagnetic in nature. All atoms, chemicals and cells produce electromagnetic fields (EMFs). Every organ in the body produces it own signature bioelectromagnetic field. An ankle sprain occurs when the strong ligaments that support the ankle stretch beyond their limits and tear. They range from mild to severe, depending upon how much damage there is to the ligaments.

Most sprains that occur are minor injuries that heal with home treatments like RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). However, if your ankle is very swollen and painful to walk on or if you are having trouble putting weight on your ankle at all, be sure to see your doctor.

If you do not do the proper rehabilitation with more severe ankle sprains you will weaken your ankle making it more likely that you will injure it again. Repeated ankle sprains can lead to long-term problems, like chronic ankle pain, arthritis, and ongoing instability.

An ankle sprain is an injury to one or more of the ligaments that stabilize the ankle.

Description

Ligaments are fibrous tissue that connect bones to bones. The ligaments in the ankle help to keep the bones in proper position and stabilize the joint.

Most sprained ankles occur in the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Sprains can range from tiny tears in the fibers that make up the ligament to complete tears through the tissue.

If there is a complete tear of the ligaments, the ankle may become unstable after the initial injury phase passes. Over time, this instability can result in damage to the bones and cartilage of the ankle joint.

Cause

Your foot can twist unexpectedly during many different activities, such as:

  • Walking or exercising on an uneven surface
  • Falling down
  • Participating in sports that require cutting actions or rolling and twisting of the foot—such as trail running, basketball, tennis, football, and soccer
  • During sports activities, someone else may step on your foot while you are running, causing your foot to twist or roll to the side.

 

Symptoms

A sprained ankle is painful. Other symptoms may include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Instability of the ankle—this may occur when there has been complete tearing of the ligament or a complete dislocation of the ankle joint.

You might also hear or feel a "pop" if there is a significant tear when the sprain occurs. Symptoms of a severe sprain are similar to those of a broken bone and require prompt medical evaluation.

Grades of Ankle Sprains

Sprains are graded based on how much damage has occurred to the ligaments.

Grade 1 Sprain (Mild)

  • Slight stretching and microscopic tearing of the ligament fibers
  • Mild tenderness and swelling around the ankle

Grade 2 Sprain (Moderate)

  • Partial tearing of the ligament
  • Moderate tenderness and swelling around the ankle
  • If the doctor moves the ankle in certain ways, there is an abnormal looseness of the ankle joint

Grade 3 Sprain (Severe)

  • Complete tear of the ligament
  • Significant tenderness and swelling around the ankle
  • If the doctor pulls or pushes on the ankle joint in certain movements, substantial instability occurs

Treatment

Almost all ankle sprains can be treated without surgery.

A three-phase program guides treatment for all ankle sprains—from mild to severe:

  • Phase 1 includes resting, protecting the ankle and reducing the swelling.
  • Phase 2 includes restoring range of motion, strength and flexibility.
  • Phase 3 includes maintenance exercises and the gradual return to activities that do not require turning or twisting the ankle.

About Achilles Tendonitis

What is Achilles Tendonitis? It is the irritation and/or injury of the Tendon that connects the calf muscles to heal of your foot. This injury is usually a result of over use or a new activity such a start of a new season or new walking program. The symptoms are a tightness and pain in the heel and tenderness at the Achilles. The Achilles Tendon connects the heel to your powerful calf muscle and is what gives you the push off and jump. As a result, the Achilles tendon is the largest tendon in your body.

Cause

The Achilles tendon is designed to connect and transfer the power of your calf to the foot.  When the entire posterior chain (from the back of the leg to the foot) get tight and are overused, the Achilles tendon can get micro-tears and inflamed resulting in a Tendonitis. In extreme cases, the Achilles can even rupture. There are two types of Achilles tendonitis: insertional tendonitis, when the micro-tears occur where the tendon inserts at the top of the heal and non-insertional tendonitis, where it occurs in the middle of the tendon.

Symptoms

Some of the most common symptoms include.:

    • Pain and stiffness along the Achilles tendon in the morning
    • Pain along the tendon or back of the heel that worsens with activity
    • Severe pain the day after exercising
    • Thickening of the tendon
    • Bone spur (insertional tendinitis)
    • Swelling that is present all the time and gets worse throughout the day with activity

    Why Cold and Compression

    Cold, often called Cryotherapy, and static compression is commonly used for the treatment of pain and inflammation after acute injury or surgical procedures. Cryotherapy has become one of the most common treatments in orthopedic medicine.

    The reason for using cold is to lower the temperature of the injured tissue. The reduction in temperature reduces the metabolic rate and helps the injured tissue survive the period after the issue. Several studies have shown that metabolic rate decreases by application of cryotherapy. Compression is often used in conjunction with cryotherapy for the care of injuries. Applying compression increases the external pressure on the tissue to prevent edema (swelling). The compression reduces the fluid loss from the vessels in the injured area, making it more difficult for fluids to accumulate.

    Ice with compression is also colder than ice alone, because of the improved skin contact and increased tissue density caused by the compression. Tissue reaches its lowest temperature faster and the tissue stays cool even after treatment ends.
